Abstract
One of the most fascinating facets of the problem of knce ligament injuries is rotatory instability. In its most common form, such instability permits pathologically increased outward rotation of the tibia on the femur.
Rupture of the medial capsular ligament is the basic lesion which permits abnormal external rotation of the tibia. The pes anserinus transplantation is a surgical procedure designed to control rotatory instability of the knee.
The author has reported a clinical study in 19 patients (20 knee joints) with injuries of medial collateral ligament of the knee joint, who was treated by pes anserinus transplantation at the department of orthopedic surgery of this hospital during the past 3 years from January 1971 to December 1973, and the results are as following;
1. The peak of age incidence was in 3rd decade (20-29 year old age) as 11 cases(57.9%).
This injury was more prevalent in the male with a 2.81 ratio of male to female.
2. The traffic accident was the most common causes as 18 cases (94 7%).
3. In 20 cases of injuries of medial collateral ligament of the knee joint, 9 cases(45%) were operated under 2 weeks after trauma, 9 cases (45%) from 2 weeks to 3 months and 2 cases (10%) over 3 months.
4. Excellent to good result were more often obtained in recent injuries under 2 weeks than in old injuries, short period of immobilization after operation than in long period of immobilization and injury of medial collateral ligament alone than in combined injuries of ligaments.
